OWC Tips & Deals 1/14/2008

Intro:
Greetings from San Franscisco! It is the 'eve of the Macworld Expo 2008 and mere hours remain before Steve lets it all loose in his annual expo kickoff keynote. The OWC and NewerTech booths are all setup, stocked up, and ready.... now it's just the hours to go before 'show time'.....

2007 rumors Macworld made true, 2008 Rumor finale
It's fun each year to look back and see how the rumor of yesteryear had panned out. At the last Macworld, was really more of an AppleWorld with none of the expected/rumored actual Mac computers coming to be - Jobs announced, at the computer show, that Apple Computer, Inc. was now renamed to Apple, Inc., and it would be the revolutionary iPhone which would get its first public debut. Very arguably, the only new Mac introduced at the 2007 expo was the Axiotron Modbook solution - which took Best of Show honors.. and a year later, glad to saw we've got those solutions shipping and vaporware no more. :)

2007 Show Predictions:

Mac Pro 8-Core Xeon Models - Nope, but the first 8-core Mac Pro was introduced in April.

AppleTV - Ding! Not Apple's hottest product though, not by a long shot.

Apple iPhone - There were some doubts brewing ahead of the expo, but introduced at the expo and first available at the end of June, one can hardly not know how the iPhone changed everything last year as the hottest product of 2007.

MacBook Pro SuperSlim 12" - Nope, nada.. yet...

iLife 2007 released - Nope.... iLife 2008 released in September though

New Headless Mac - This remains but a pipe dream

2008 Rumors and Predictions.... and less than 12 hours till Jobs spills the beans!

#1 Mac Pro 8-Core with new 1.6GHz FSB Xeon architecture - last newsletter we hit that right on, just didn't expect them till Macworld! Apple let that cat out of the bag _last_ Tuesday during CES! New XServes too...

#2 SuperSlim MacBook Pro 12" laptop - uses solid state hard drive instead of physical drive, super slim, low power, and long battery life. Perhaps last year's rumor was just a tad early... A new product like this could very well have quite a development cycle.

#3 Blu-Ray Video Play-Back support introduced for Macs. Honestly, we're betting on it and even all ready to go with a $220 Pioneer Blu-Ray Player/Reader + SuperDrive DL DVD/CD Burner combo. Been able to playback Blu-Ray movies with relative ease on Windows for some time... Come on Apple, we want to watch those Disney Blu-Rays with Leopard. :)

#4 Macbook Docking Displays - how cool would it be to just slide your Macbook into an Apple Cinema Display for full docked operation, no cables to mess with, etc? Might find out... of course, I rather like having, cables and all, my laptop's display + my desktop display used together as a dual display setup.

#5 New and greatly improved AppleTV - highly anticipated that Apple's got an update to this product, hopefully something revolutionary and with a more open approach that gives it some substantive appeal. The recent announcements concerning online content delivery deals and the iTunes format files to be on store bought DVDs is nice.... need something a lot more with the device itself.

#6 Lots of rumors, and would make sense, that a new updated iPhone is set to debut with a much desired boost to data performance through adoption of GSM network support.

#7 A pipe dream it's been and a pipe dream likely to remain, but there has been some additional chatter lately about a possible $1000-1500 headless Mac. Analysts note that there is demand for this and that Apple would benefit by providing a line that eliminated this blind spot. Don't want to get my hopes or yours up... but the dream lives on.

#9 There's something in the air - so proclaims this years Apple banners displayed about Macworld. That could go with the new GSM iPhones with their higher data performance.... Maybe Apple is going to integrate the cell technology as an options into the new 12" SuperSlim - and/or and option for all the Macbooks so you can pull data out of the air nearly anywhere. Hope whatever is 'in air' for us rocks!

The tip of the iceberg the above speculation may very well be. It's been strongly suggested that Apple may have chosen to get the Mac Pro and Xserves out of the way last week keep the keynote rolling with even more exciting intros. We'll be seeing in just a few hours. Speedbumps to the existing line always possible, maybe more than just that in store for the iMac... In hours all this speculation becomes moot. Can't wait to talk about what's new and real!

Intro Closing:
Kind of used this abbreviated format for one more issue. I was actually worried I'd not even get this one out the door before it's content was already moot before it hit. And in saying as much, well, this was a little rushed and I apologize for any of those annoying typos that sometimes invade.

After tomorrow, the latest and greatest will be reality and not speculation. Next week, I'll be going over the new Mac Pro + whatever other goodies Apple as pitched out there. There's bound to be lots to talk about and I look forward to a putting out a full newsletter packed with all the little details on such.

Thank you reading and thanks for letting us fire these newsletters out your way. Have a great week, and if we don't see ya at Macworld, wishing ya a great weekend and beyond now as well.
