OWC Tips n' Deals July 2nd, 2010
In this issue:
Greetings and salutations from your OWC friends in Woodstock!
It's been way too long and for that I apologize. With the birth of my fourth child, it's
been a busy time of rebalancing, both personally and professionally. The entire OWC team has been on a tear, in development terms. We've got a whole
host of new product lines aimed to improve various elements of the Mac experience!
As we head into the 4th of July weekend, I wanted to briefly touch on some of the happenings. Not to worry, I will be back before the end of July with a continuation and more detailed coverage, too! Wishing you and yours the very best, everyone at OWC hopes that, despite these challenging times, you have a great (and safe) July 4th! After all friends and family is what it's all about! Ultimate performance, reliability, and silent operation - OWC SSDs
The new OWC Mercury Extreme Pro line of Solid State Drives (SSD) heralds a
new dawn when it comes to Solid State performance. Built using Sandforce
series processors, these drives not only provide high-performance of up to
285MB/s - but further do not suffer from the speed degradation and other
issues typically of pretty much any other non-Sandforce based SSD you can
install in your Mac today.
While most other SSDs have very weak internal management and depend on OS interfaced TRIM support (something Apple does NOT support/provide currently in the Mac OS), the OWC Mercury Extreme Pro series have the advanced data management capabilities built in that eliminate such need. While the competition's drives fade out over time and can require complete reformatting/reconditioning to restore performance - if at all, the OWC Mercury Extreme Pro models stay at full speed right and steady. What are we talking about? Mac Performance Guide has done extensive testing of OWC, Intel, and Crucial SSDs both for initial performance and 'seasoned' performance. Not just at the beginning, OWC's SSDs are a world apart from these competitors because speed, data steadiness, and reliability are maintained over the duration as well!
With Dura-Write wear leveling, active block management, and over provisioned redundancy - we've built the OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD line to offer industry leading real-world performance and reliability - and not just for short time show. Check out our video shootout to see the difference to believe it. Be it the lasted Mac or a Mac from several years ago, it's like or better than a new Mac with the SSD inside. Now available up to 480GB with 60GB starting from $199, models up to 240GB even offer a full 30-Day Money-Back test drive. Once you experience the difference, there's just no going back to a traditional hard drive. See it for yourself. :) The OWC 'Data Doubler' for all 'Unibody' MacBook and MacBook Pro models
There are a good number of us that rarely use our optical drives, but would
love to have additional internal drive capacity. Enter the Data Doubler
Currently available for $79.99 or in special discounted bundles w/drive from $129.99 We're just getting going with this. Next time around will have a lot more that illustrates the various benefits derived from a 2nd drive inside. What about the need for an optical drive some of the time? We're working on a low cost solution to make the existing drive external - but currently, from under $60 complete external options that are also nearly three times faster than the internal too! The OWC 'Multi-Mount' 5.25" to 3.5" and to 2.5" mount kits
Regardless of what computer you have, you may have an open bay or two that
you'd like to use for a specific drive need. The OWC Multi-Mount kits
are the solution.
These kits allow for the proper, vibration isolated installation of up to two 2.5" drives into a 3.5" or 5.25" Bay - or for a single 3.5" drive to be mounted in a 5.25" bay. Starting from $17.99, you have multiple options for adding drives the right way to bays originally intended for other purpose. The new iPhone 4G
We've got some coverage of this on our blog and not sure I'd have a whole
lot more to add beyond that and all the buzz out there already.
I had to wait for AT&T to provide and they took a full week longer than Apple. In fact, just started playing with it two days ago. From my own experience so far.... I like the speed. It feels a good bit snappier compared to the 3GS. I don't so much like the feel physically of it though. It looks cool and all, but I personally felt the prior design to be more comfortable. The good news for me - my - favorite Carbon Fiber style 3G/GS case fits to well enough for me to get by till we have the 4G version expected sometime towards end of the month. I'd by no means suggest buying that for a 4G, but nonetheless - you may find a case you already have is at least a starting point. Far and wide should be a really good selection of cases out there within the next 2-4 weeks in addition to the $29+ options in the Apple store today. And yes... Most any case eliminates that reception issue from holding a certain way - which Apple states is due to a reception strength calculation error for which an update will be out to correct within the next couple weeks. FaceTime is really cool - annoying you have to make a network cell call to use it, even though Facetime itself operates over your internet connection. The dual cameras are very cool and useful too. Heck, my wife last night was even using the front camera as a digital mirror.
Lots of good with the new iPhone looking past new physical feel and the
non-cased reception glitch.
OWC completes official LEED Platinum certification
Completed in March of 2008, our current OWC Headquarters was designed with a
strong focus on conservation and energy efficiency while providing OWC the
facility resource needed to continue to grow and ever better serve our your
technology needs. It is with great pride that I can say that the US Green
Building Council officially recognized our headquarters with LEED
(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum
Certification, the highest level of certification and also a first for a
business/facility of our kind. The LEED program looks at overall facility
energy and environmental efficiencies as well as consideration for the
impact grounds and locally sourcing of materials used in the building
process.
For over twenty years we've sought to utilize and promote technologies to enhance and extend/conserve the useful life of technology devices. It only made sense for us to apply the same thinking when it came to our new home. We furthered for becoming a provider of energy with the installation/construction of our on-site 500kw Vestas Wind Turbine. We're using technologies available today in a long-term view heading to the future. It's going to be a long road to the elimination of fossil fuels and shift to renewables. I personally believe that all resources should be used in balance. The gulf spill is a horrible tragedy. One that shows us that our decisions can have profound effects. I believe that the Gulf disaster was the result of criminal neglect by BP, as well as the government agencies charged with overseeing them. Our public policies need to ensure proper regulations and utilization our natural resources as wisely as possible to support our current energy needs. In my opinion, the more dependent we are on foreign energy supply, the less financial resources we have to actually invest in the future of our own renewables and break free of the dependency on non-renewable energy in general. In the end, it's all about balance and a sustainable, realistic long-term plan. Without balance, it's difficult to move in any positive direction.
