Greetings from OWC!!
As the subject notes, going to keep this brief as possible with the
additional detail and interaction via our blog. My idea of brief is
arguably less than, but will make that effort. :)
So let’s get to it!
New Desktop Macs From Apple
It is hard to believe it has been over 15 months since Apple introduced
even the most minor update to its line of desktop Macs. I don't count a
change in baseProcessor speed and memory (without adding any newProcessor options, ports, etc) as an update. Humorously, Apple did
actually put a 'new' burst on the MacPro listing after this change of base
config in June. You can
read more about the depth of the change and more on
this 'slap on the face' non-refresh + super-chargers for existing MacPros
on our blog and join the conversation
Moving to the present...
Apple introduced brand new iMacs, updated Mac
mini, and a new 13" Retina MacBookPro all on Tuesday. They also
introduced "Fusion Drive" options for the new iMac and Mac mini, and a hard
drive + SSD performance caching solution which we'll go deeper into once
we have it better broken down. The new Mac mini gets a greatProcessor
speed boost and USB 3 ports replace those that were USB 2.0 in the previous version. The iMac is
completely brand new with higher performance and an amazingly super thin
design that's almost unbelievable.
The iMac also gets USB 3, but unlike
the Mac mini which retains its FireWire 800 interface - you'll need
Apple's Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter ($29) in order to move your
FireWire drives to it. The Retina 13" MacBookPro is a nice complement to
the 15" Retina model, but be aware that 8GB solded and non-upgradeable is
the only memory config for the 13". Retina 15" also is factory soldered
and non-upgradeable, but an option for up to 16GB is offered. The standard
MacBookPro 13" and 15" models both support up to 16GB with our memory
upgrade options.

Why USB 3 is a big deal and, in actuality, a good deal as an external
storage option, but it's not without controversy, these two blogs shed some light
and generated some lively discussion:
As the Mac mini is now shipping, we of course have the right memory for it
and for up to 63% less than the factory option cost. You can check that out
online here:

New MacBookPro 13" With Retina Display
Take a look at the new Retina 13" unboxed and with the cover off!
And... first time publicly confirming, yes – our
AuraPro SSD introduced for the 15" works in the 13" as well.
As was reasonable expected, Apple
uses the same SSD design in both Retina models (and I suspect in the iMac
as well, but that we will see in the future). Our drive offers cost and
performance benefits compared to the stock options.
You'll soon see the 13" compatibility added + a 240GB option as well. In
truth, our SSD options for Retina will really come together in about 6
weeks when our EnvoyPro enclosure for the Retina SSDs starts to ship...
Not only are you upgrading your internal drive, but now you get to make
that Apple SSD into a high-performance, portable, external too.
There will be a lot more coverage of these new Macs in upcoming days and
weeks and you don't have to wait for me to call it out. We also cover lots
of other useful and interesting stuff too... all on the OWC blog at:
