OWC Tips & Deals 11/26/2008

Intro:
Greetings & Happy Thanksgiving from the OWC Team! Hard to believe it's already here. We'll be carving up the turkey and with trimmings all ready. As fast as these holidays come to be, it's that time with you family gotta make count all the more. Once the moment is passed, only in memory does it exist. Ideally fond memories with lots of thanks.

While we're being thankful and hopefully enjoying the day with family, remember those that don't get the day off. A sincere thank you to everyone in our public services - police officers, fire fighters, doctors, med techs, ambulance drivers, all of you with jobs and responsibilities that don't just pause because it's a national holiday, weekend, etc. Huge thanks to those in the service and our Veterans who's service has preserved and protected so much we sometimes forget to be thankful for. In this age of information, lots of things to complain about - just need to remember so much more there, the important things to be thankful for.

Macworld Expo 2008 - January 5th - 9th
As quickly as the holidays are upon us, 2009 is coming quick... Starting off the year comes the main Mac event, Macworld Expo. Along with Apple and Steve... the OWC Team will the there in full force. At our booth, we'll be showing off our latest goodies and those just around the bend. It's always a pleasure to see our returning friends year after year + the new friends we make too. Email and phone can be ok - but falls way short of the face to face time we get in person. Anyway...

We hope to see ya there and we're still working on the whole pass situation. IDG has changed their program this year and that may preclude us from doing our normal free pass electronic 'hand out'. Will have more information to some conclusive within the next week and will definitely let you know! As soon as we know something, we'll be updating our Macworld Expo page with the 2009 pass and event info as well.

SuperDrive upgrades now available for MacBook & MacBook Pro
If you have an original MacBook with just a CDRW+DVD combo drive - or an early MacBook Pro that lacks the dual-layer DVD burning capability - or your outside warranty and the original optical drive is failing... You now have an internal upgrade/replacement option from OWC. From $159.99 for 13" and 15" models, from $89.99 for MacBook Pro 17" Models, we've got Superdrive Kits to get you up to the latest. Internal Superdrives for other Mac models also start from $29.99 + External for pretty much all Macs are available from $71.99. You don't need to buy a new Mac to burn more formats faster.

Rerun: Make your current Mac New Again
It can be fun and cool to have the latest and greatest Mac models.. and there is always the point at which it makes sense to make that plunge. But before going there, you can potentially get as much or more than you need/want with upgrades to your current Mac. Depending on the goals sought, upgrading can not only support those goals - but do so better than the base config of a new system and at a fraction of the cost.

Some pretty good detail is hit up in the October 7th Newsletter - so I again refer you back to it. Short some super surprise, we'll not be seeing the next gen of Mac Pro, iMac, or Mac mini until next year (ideally some or most at Macworld Expo)... Upgrading what you've got makes it easy to wait and even after what's new is the latest just released, being able to stick with what you've got gives more time for bugs to work out, speeds to go up, and prices on the new to come down further too. If there's one near constant (i say near as the recent MacBook Unibody models were a seemingly one time exception), computers get faster and less costly with each passing day.

See your home's power usage real-time, reduce power bill
Few of us like to see our monthly power bill, any bill for that matter... but when it comes to our power usage, that's usually when we think about it.

Enter the Blue Line Innovations PowerCost Monitor - this nifty device works with pretty much any type of power meter, is allowed/legal (in fact power utility companies are starting to promote this product), and lets you see you're power consumption in real time.

I put one on my meter and while have always tried to be energy conservational, this gives that extra reminder and even challenge to make sure lights, tv, etc, computer, etc - is shut off when not in use. For those with variable rate plans (different power cost for peak vs. non-peak), it's easily programmable and helpful for shifting power intensive activities (doing laundry, etc) to those non-peak hours. When you have it displayed front and center how much the power is costing you real-time, it's quite motivating to make that number as low as can go.

The Blue Line PowerCost Monitor is available for our readers discounted to $119 and I can tell you first hand, it definitely is an investment that will pay for itself. Reduce your Carbon footprint and your electricity bill!

Fun Facts about the Thanksgiving Holiday

Some interesting Stats for Thanksgiving. Didn't know that Illinois had the record for pumpkin production. :)

Closing:
There's never a dull moment lately with all of the goings on. Such craziness out there. In the grand scheme of things - very thankful for my family and friends. It's good once in a while to step back and consider what's truly important and everything else that's just a great race to, well, not sure. Watching my 3 1/2 year old son, 1 1/2 year old daughter, and 4 month old daughter grow and develop - that's something. The balance of need to do, want to do, and what's truly important to do - be a part of.

I think read the average Thanksgiving meal is in the realm of 4500 calories. Gotta love the holidays, truly.. and then comes time for the New Year's resolution - all in balance.

From our family to yours - have a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving. Thanks for being a Tips 'n Deals subscriber!
