OWC Tips & Deals 12/19/2007
Intro: Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from all of us at Other World Computing. One week until Christmas... two weeks to 2008... and only four weeks until another Macworld Expo! For now, this is the time for Family and Friends. On that note - I couldn't be happier that the Macworld Expo is starting one week later than the 'normal' of prior years. Actually have the time and space personally for really enjoying these holidays with my wife and kids. Always thankful and ever more. For all you last minute shoppers, (hey, I embody the 11th hour last minute shopper when it comes to hitting the stores) - a quick note on holiday shipping for your OWC Mac Goodies... To ensure delivery by Christmas Eve (Monday, December 24th), the following options are available: Orders with UPS 2nd Day or FedEx Economy delivery by 6PM on Thursday, December 20th (tomorrow) and still receive by (or before) Christmas Eve. Select UPS Next Day, FedEx Overnight, or US Postal Express Mail on orders placed by 6:30PM on Friday, December 21st and it will still be there... This applies to orders with all items noted as in stock at the time of the order. Order online or give one of our Mac Team Experts a 'jingle' at 800-275-4576. :) As always, and especially now, the best to you and yours and a Happy Holiday Season! Some quick and fun gift ideas for the Mac User in your family If there's a new Mac coming into the house... or a great Mac already up and running - More memory can make a huge difference. Memory is easy to install (and we have online installation videos to show just how) and at today's low - it is an unbelievably value for the performance it can bring. We're talking fewer/shorter 'spinning beachballs', general faster operation completion, and snappier feel... A year ago 1.0GB for the Intel Macs cost over $120. Today - you can add 4.GB for under $100!. Memory is a great gift to see more use from an already great Mac and our online compatibility guide makes buying the right Mac memory easy. What could be more fun than being able to watch, record, edit TV and import/view video from other sources too - right on your Mac? If this appeals to you or someone you know, ElGato has made it very easy with their EyeTV product line - made just for Macs. Not only do various modules tune TV, but they are all great for importing video from your VCR, Camcorder, etc. With deals starting from $59, doesn't cost a lot at all to expand that Macs A/V Multimedia functionality. So - got some great videos on your Mac and want to use/view them on your iPhone, iPod, or even Sony PSP? Doing the conversion is made easy on your Mac, but takes a long time to do and while it's going - leaves your Mac bogged down and lets say less than enjoyable to use for other tasks while the encoding goes on. For $79, Elgato's Turbo.264 is a plug and play USB 2.0 device designed to address both of these 'challenges'. First and foremost, specifically designed for video encoding - this product does the A/V conversions significantly faster than even the latest Core 2 Duo Macs. In addition, since it's doing the work - you're free to continue using other applications on your Mac without the major performance degradation. That's a real win-win solution there. Maybe it's time to bring a new cat into the house, perhaps Apple's latest OS 10.5 'Leopard' is just that 'cat'. If so, it's $109 for single user or $175 for 5-user 'Family Pack' versions - no extra shots needed. For information on various requirements and upgrades beneficial to 10.5 Leopard, check out our October 26th newsletter with it's feature on just that. Another highly popular category at OWC is FireWire storage. Be it for audio/video, backup, music, photos, extra storage, bootable external portable, etc... Have a wide variety of options designed with your Mac in mind for optimum performance and reliability. It's amazing how fast you can fill up a hard drive these days, but - easy to plug and play FireWire to keep on adding more. :) For any of the goodies you may be seeking, it's worth a quick browse of the Tips n' Deals Reader Specials page for sure. On this page is a pretty decent selection of products with nice discounts for our newsletter subscribers like you. Be it iPod accessories, iMac stands, laptop carrying cases, rack mounted storage, raid controllers, etc... Give our New Search a shot. The search box is on every page as it's always been - in the header just left of the 'Live Support' button - but it's better than ever. About two weeks ago we deployed a major upgrade to our search that has made it easier than ever to find the products your looking for. Although we're still working to make it even better, the search today is about 100X better (IMHO) vs. what it replaced just two weeks ago. Don't forget - at any point: before, during, after a purchase - we're here to help. And while we're not necessarily here 24/7, our online Tech Center has manuals, troubleshooting information, and installation videos - a great resource you can access anytime! Alright - shameless plugging over. :) For Fun and of interest It was about a year ago that Cisco introduced its iPhone line under the Linksys brand. The Linksys iPhone is an 'Internet Phone' designed to work with online services via your home's broadband to make and receive calls, stream video and audio, etc. It's not a bad product in its own right... but after Apple and Cisco settled their trademark dispute (Cisco actually owned the iPhone trademark for years prior to this introduction), this product seems all but forgotten. With that said - I don't own a Cisco/Linksys iPhone... and I really have enjoyed using my Apple iPhone and wouldn't trade it for anything. Lots of ongoing interest in Apple's iPhone also has it ranked as the most used search term on Google this year as well. As a continuing note to the Cisco product... you will notice in a search for iPhone on Google, only those referencing the Apple iPhone are on the first page. Also, interestingly enough, not even the wikipedia iPhone entry mentions the Cisco product. I'd say Apple pretty well owns anything iPhone these days. Last week brought some rather severe weather in the form of an ice storm to various parts of the midwest and including our neck of the woods. Although the pictures can hardly do justice.. with the exception of one.... it was really quite a sight with the sun shining and glistening on the field just next to our current headquarters. Jamie was happy to get out there, brave the cold :), and snap some some photos to share. Playing on childhood memories, well, ya got to love Apple's new 'animated Christmas classic ad'. Although Apple doesn't seem to have the same sense of humor corporately today, it's certainly not lost in their advertising. Intro Closing: With Christmas shopping still to do, I will now conclude with this portion 'our of presentation'. Seriously - all the best to you and yours for a most wonderful holiday season. Thanks for reading and we'll be back one more time before the year rolls to 2008. But more does follow... Still in this newsletter we have Link to Quick Tip: Chris's Top Ten, this week's Reader Specials Highlights, and Roger's Music on the Mac following some 'messages from our sponsor'. Quick Tip: Chris's Top 10 Sometimes you just don't know what those great applications are till you find them (or delete them accidentally) missing. In this case, we're talking about the top of Chris's list for Top 10 Shareware/Freeware/Donationware Mac applications you can freely download on the internet. Some of these we've covered before, for others this listing is their first. All of them definitely have earned their place. Some are 'free', others are free to try.... for all of them, if you appreciate the function or functionality they offer, we encourage you to support their authors. We have no affiliation and receive no benefit related to this support... well, other than a benefit we all share in, the (hopefully) continued support of these applications. Enjoy! Plenty of stock available at the special reader price of $29.50 See your home's power usage real-time, reduce power bill Few of us like to see our monthly power bill, any bill for that matter... but when it comes to our power usage, that's usually when we think about it. Enter the Blue Line Innovations PowerCost Monitor - this nifty device works with pretty much any type of power meter, is allowed/legal (in fact power utility companies are starting to promote this product), and lets you see you're power consumption in real time. I put one on my meter and while have always tried to be energy conservational, this gives that extra reminder and even challenge to make sure lights, tv, etc, computer, etc - is shut off when not in use. For those with variable rate plans (different power cost for peak vs. non-peak), it's easily programmable and helpful for shifting power intensive activities (doing laundry, etc) to those non-peak hours. When you have it displayed front and center how much the power is costing you real-time, it's quite motivating to make that number as low as can go. The Blue Line PowerCost Monitor is available for our readers discounted to $119 and I can tell you first hand, it definitely is an investment that will pay for itself. It's also nice no longer being surprised when the power bill shows up. :) Again, deals like these and more - reserved just for Readers - found on your regularly updated Tips n' Deals Exclusive Specials Page. Music on the Mac: Roger's Holiday Guide Greetings from the macsales.com Music Department! We recently attended the Wisconsin Music Educators Conference and gained some valuable insight into our customers needs. We featured quite a few of our music products and USB and FireWire storage solutions at the show. We also deduced correctly that educators and students needed an inexpensive portable digital recorder. We brought the iKey Plus recorder to the show and it was very well received. I have featured this device in recent months in this newsletter so will just give the basic description here again. It is about the size of a paperback book, is super simple to use, comes with a stereo mic and can record to flash drives, your iPod, or any drive with USB 2.0 - even convenient USB 'Key Chain' stick drives. It's helpful to know that it takes 10 Megabytes (100 Minutes per 1.0GB (Gigabyte) of storage) to record one minute of CD quality stereo audio. We recorded the US Army Field Band at the conference from the back of a very large banquet room and the results were very good. We then were able to play that audio for visitors to our booth. Many educators and students were impressed and are purchasing their own. One of the big factors in this unit's success is its price. At only $149.00, it is significantly less than the competition from M-Audio, Edirol and Zoom. To be fair, some of those units have some advanced features such as the ability to record at better than CD quality but the iKey Plus records at CD quality or MP3 and is the "right fit" as far as features vs price for many people. The people we talked with felt that a device like this could be shared among choral, bands and soloists in their departments. Many students also commented that they would use the device to record themselves and lectures too. This product is a true winner because it does one thing well at a very reasonable price. Please call 800-275-4576 to speak to one of our knowledgeable sales staff and discuss your specific needs. Happy holiday shopping! Don't forget about our Audio/Music Forum. We want to be your resource for answers to your questions...and let you share your experience with others too. Please find the "right stuff" at great prices here. Closing: I find it ever more interesting how fast time seems to fly. A recent study seeking to find out if people were 'hyper sensitive' during events of crises or fear might have the answer to that. In such moments the recollection is such as if time itself was slowed... For the sake of things, relative time is a constant - but did this mean you could perceive things faster in such a state? The result came back negative, you weren't able to perceive things faster in these heightened states... but apparently - a part of the brain concerning memory is much more active. Essentially, because you remember much more of that event - it seems to have lasted longer vs. the rest of what is normal. In the same line... as we get older and I suppose that less is new, we have less new remembered and thus - it seems to go much faster, vs. when we were kids with everything to be new. Making the best of each moment has always been good advice and seem to make time slow some too. With that, going to 'wrap' this one up. Merry Christmas and may Your Holiday be filled with joy!
