OWC Tips & Deals 12/29/2006

Intro:
A Happy New Year from the OWC Team! It'll be 2007 in just a few short days, so this will be the last newsletter of year. Amazing, it's really almost 2007. Another year to look back and reflect upon on. Then, days past are simply past - and only forward can we go. Seems like it's at the New Years this sinks in the most. Or perhaps, most of all after Macworld - when there is time again to catch a breath for such ponderings. 2007 here we come!

In case your wondering, the OWC team will be here on Friday as well as on Saturday processing and shipping during our normal operating hours for those end of year purchase needs. We will be closed Sunday(normal) and Monday(New Years) with our standard hours again resuming on Tuesday, January 2nd.

Have a Super Happy New Year's Eve/New Year's - Be Safe! - and I'll look forward to seeing/writing you in the 2007. As ever, thanks for being a reader!

Macworld Expo San Francisco Jan 8th to the 12th: Events
The Macworld show starts on Monday the 8th with seminars, but the real action starts on Tuesday with Steve Job's Keynote address and the opening of the Expo Hall... where the latest hardware and software from Apple and Apple Developers is then on display for all to see. It's $45 to get into the Expo on the 9th.... or download this OWC Macworld Pass PDF and put that $45 to better use. :) Helpful tip - while you can bring the PDF printed out to get in all the same, use the link on that PDF to register online before going to show and you can skip that typically long registration line when you arrive at Moscone.

As has been the case for the past several shows, OWC's 'Technology Theater' will be doing a variety of hands on demonstrations. Although subject to possible update, the schedule in what should be near final form is online now.

If you take a glance at that schedule... might notice our special announcement... Although we are presently sworn to secrecy - come January 9th, our venture partner Axiotron and OWC have an extremely exciting product announcement and introduction. In the works for some time now, it's something that sure to generate some buzz. Some additional hint is given in the OWC Presentation Schedule as we mention laptop.... This is a big one and something very different from anything we've introduced and offered in the past. :)

By now, there's a pretty decent chance you've got one of our award winning OWC Mercury, OWC Neptune, or NewerTech FireWire-USB-eSATA solutions in your personal use. Be it for backup, general data, external booting, as well as audio/video work - these solutions get the job done and done very well. These solutions aren't just for home, they're for work too. If you watch any Movies or TV, listen to any Music - given the wide professional use of our solution, it's a sure thing something you've seen or heard - be it a movie, a commercial, a jingle, or a song - saw part of it's production done on one our products. It's honestly something I find really cool and we're not talking some very well known and even award winning stuff too. But I very much digressed here and will start a new paragraph just in case caused some to tune out......

....Related to all of this and for all you budding filmmakers, OWC is proud to be a Gold Sponsor of the Sixth Annual Final Cut Pro User Group 'Supermeet' taking place during the Macworld Expo on January 10th 7PM-10PM. At this event, Hollywood filmmakers will 'talk about tapeless Final Cut Pro workflow'. Associate Editor Sean Cullen, who is working with the 'legendary' film editor Walter Murch, is one of the many presenters at this event and he will be discussing the filmless production and Final Cut Pro editing of the new Francis Coppola's film, "Youth Without Youth." The event cost $10 and that includes two raffle tickets for one of the many prizes which total over $37,000! If you're into using Final Cut Pro and will be in San Fran on the 10th - it's a great event to meet, watch, exchange, and learn from other pros + have a chance to walk away with a great prize or, if super lucky, prizes. Check it out!

Macworld Expo San Francisco Jan 8th to the 12th: Rumors
Honestly - not been a whole lot in the rumor mill compared to years past. Can hardly complain though - Apple's already delivered a great line up available right now. But here's a couple rumors, none the less:

Apple iPhone... err an Apple iTunes/Cellular phone and service entry. As Cisco's Linksys division introduced their line up of iPhone products a couple weeks ago - we know it at least won't likely be of the iPhone name from Apple. Interesting that the pundits talking of Apple iPhone rumors for so long never picked up on or checked into who owned that actual trademark. None the less - if there is something along the lines of what's been rumored to be an 'Apple iPhone', it's likely to finally see official release at the keynote.

Not really a rumor... and thus not a rumor mill contribution... The Apple iTV, pre-demoed earlier this year, is all but certain to be a feature Keynote release and then available for purchase at the Expo. This product is said to "wirelessly (802.11 networking) bridge the divide between computers and TV by streaming content from one to the other". If it 'bridges that divide' for all media types and formats, and not just Apple's - that will be pretty cool, although the $299 price doesn't make that bridge cheap. We'll see.... for me, at present I remain extremely pleased with my MediaGate that is connected via my Airport Express's Ethernet port and presently does all I need in terms of 'bridging' my media content to our home TV. Still, Apple's wireless iTV wonder will no doubt be a typical well refined and super OS X integrated solution that will be on my wish list so long as it supports the different media formats in addition to just those of Apple's preference.

The prior PowerBook G4 line offered 12", 15", and 17" options to choose from... right along side of the iBook G4 12" and 14" options. Got a MacBook 13.3" right in the middle screen size range of the original iBook line it replaced, so where's the 12" MacBook Pro? Maybe such will debut at the Keynote in the form of a MacBook Pro 12" that's also SuperSlim to boot.

Demoed at the Developer Conference, and likely to be shown off again, it's doubtful that OS X 10.5 Leopard will be released or that a specific date will be provided at the show. At last notice, Jobs said early Spring-2007. And historically, official specific release dates for both Panther and Tiger occurred only two weeks prior to them shipping. Unless something really amazing has happened and Leopard is going to be ready in January, Leopard's part in the Keynote is will just increase our excitement and drool factor for this next gen Apple OS. No matter when it comes out.... Hasta la Vista - Vista... and lots of laughs watching MS trying to 'catch the Tiger'.

On the MacResource forums, one thought has been Apple introducing a Mac mini 'Mega' - essentially a Mac mini, but larger to support more memory, PCI-Express slot or two, and that uses a faster, higher capacity, and more economical 3.5" hard drive as well. Right now - there really isn't anything for the user that wants a Mac without a built in screen, but that packs more punch than you can get from a Mac mini but for a price and in a size considerably less than that of a Mac Pro Quad Xeon. I'm all for such a Mac!

The prior three Macworld SF Expos have all featured new versions of iLife - so an iLife 2007 wouldn't much surprise, although I think iLife 2006 is already well done. Or should that be pardon my pun? Guess depends on your personal experience of the iApp suite.

Also noted on the MacResource Forums, the Apple iSight FireWires have recently disappeared from Apple and other retailer's shelves. It's a near certainty that a new USB2 version for far less than the FireWire's $149 retail will make it's debut at the Keynote.

Other normal expectations... probably Core 2 Duo in the Mac mini - every other Core Duo model got updated already, as good a time as any to do the mini Core 2 Duo or new Max maybe :). Could be a new iPod update..

Maybe speed bumps to the Mac Pro Quad Xeons.... Maybe a Mac Pro Eight-Way Xeon - we know it's possible as Intel now has the Quad-Core chips... and we had the opportunity, as did these guys, to drop a pair of the Intel Quads into one of our current Mac Pros and see them plug right in and fire right up-fully operational and utilized- with no hacking. A new Mac Pro eight-way Xeon Keynote intro seems actually a pretty good bet.

It's less than two short weeks before the Keynote that will reveal all. And perhaps the rumor mill being relatively quiet is a result of better info control at Apple.... Maybe a super surprise yet in store... two weeks to wait and wonder. :)

Apple Options Scandal
In late June Apple acknowledged the discovery of irregularities concerning the issuance of stock options to Apple execs. Along with this acknowledgement, they also announced their own internal probe into the these options issuances.

In October, Steve Jobs made a rare apology concerning this issue occurring under his watch and as a result of Apple's internal problem, former apple CFO Fred Anderson resigned from Apple's board of directors.

All of the sudden in the last week - the heat seems to really be turned up. Jobs has gotten an attorney and now web stories like this one are suggesting that criminal charges may be forthcoming.

From what I've been able to research - the stories leading one to expect the worst are likely a bit sensationalized. Not too long ago writers certainly greatly exaggerated the 'imminent doom' of Apple... And while Apple definitely been getting great press in more recent years, still seems like it's the dream of some to take their own bite out of Apple - so to speak. Apple is one of over a hundred companies being investigated for option related irregularities - yet they're the feature story. And to be expected when you're at the top of the game and such a visible and recognized target. No doubt Microsoft is happy to see this distraction for their arch competitor.

In looking into some details... Options that Steve Jobs received that could be in question were cancelled in 2004. They were cancelled because they had no value due to a drop in the value of Apple stock between 2001 and 2004, but none the less cancelled. At the time of the cancellation, restricted stock valued at 75 million was then issued and with proper board approval. Of unrelated note, Steve sold about half of those shares earlier this year for $295 mil reportedly for covering the tax liability on the gains from the Disney buyout of Pixar. Nothing wrong with any of that.

The actual problems seem to exist for several options grants to Apple Execs other than Steve Jobs and between 1997 and 2002 where these grants appear to have been backdated. In such cases, the recipients benefit with essentially an instant windfall as an option price to convert to a share of stock is based on the date shown for issuance. Backdating would be done to have a lower price for such conversion providing for an immediate gain when converting the option and then selling the resulting received shares of stock.

I don't pretend to fully understand all the ins and outs of this. Apparently, to some degree, backdating isn't necessarily even illegal. What is a problem though is if such option grants are not properly reported. Until 2002, Apple apparently had no executive compensation oversight committee. Seems Apple might have handled certain things somewhat sloppily. While no mal-intent may have been intended and the resulting compensation probably was even fair and/or deserved - the process used to provide it was wrong. The SEC, which is there to protect investors, doesn't accept such negligence as an excuse. Public companies in general have an obligation to their shareholders. The late and/or improper reporting of such can result a 'correction' to the stock price that should have already been reflected had the cost been reported when it was supposed to have been. For your average stock holder, and who may have added to their position while it may have been inflated due to the lack of this reporting, it can mean a significant and unfair hit to their holdings.

The actual cost impact to Apple's shareholders relating to the actual grants with issues I believe to be very small in the grand scheme of things. Really glad that Jobs had his options cancelled in 2004... Although they were upside down in 2004 - they'd have been worth well more than his net gain for the restricted stock he was then issued and no doubt would have already exercised related to the Pixar sale as noted above. That would have made this situation a bit more complicated in my opinion.

Jobs has lawyered up - but in my opinion, that's more that to have someone there to deal with the issue so he can stay focused on driving Apple forward. It's also good to have statements about whatever issues surround Job's own options (which were cancelled, again, in 2004) coming from an attorney vs. a chance that an answer Jobs gave could be phrased in such a way for any kind of out of context use. Always love reading news articles where information and/or peoples own words taken in part and used out of context for the sake of making the story bigger or to slant it one way or the other. But anyway...

We'll see what we see - but the big investor adviser types seem to have little concern. A lot of hype without a whole lot of real issue. Certainly nothing like the Comverse options scandal, which also pops in the press now and again. Whereas any wrong doing on Apple's part so far would appear to be just sloppy accounting work (probably why the Apple Board Member who was CFO got the boot), with Comverse you've got several execs (one of whom turned fugutive and was captured in Namibia) who appear to have defrauded stockholders with clear intention to do so. It sucks for Apple to be lumped into an 'investigation class' with such likes, but, they did screw up - they've acknowledged that, and short of some major bomb that's yet to be dropped hosing up Mr. Jobs - this too will pass, and probably pretty quickly.

For Fun and of interest
Last week's link to the David Pogue videocast on 'why Vista isn't simply Microsoft copying more from OS X' seemed to have problems. I think I found out why and that's fixed. David Pogue is an awesome Apple advocate and his video supported narrative> is great for a well needed laugh at Microsoft. :)

Quick Tip: Your DVDs to Digital on your Mac

There are lots of cool things you can now do with media right from your computer. It's not too many years off that DVDs will be quickly approaching rank with the Dodo Bird. In the mean time, being able to transfer your DVDs to the Mac which can then serve as your personal, electronic video jukebox - this you can do, even if a little in the gray. This tip is not intended for illicit use, but rather to exercise your right to the media that one way or another you are rightful owner of. Not looking to open up any debates, just show you some tools that open the door to getting a whole lot out of products like this MediaGate which I personally own.

Originally featured in a year ago, the articles are as useful today as they were then. And with consideration to something you might have gotten for Christmas or Hanukah, etc - well, probably just as timely. :)

The first article covers using MacTheRipper and HardBrake for importing from a copy protected DVD and saving into the playable ".avi" video format.

Article number two covers the use of MacTheRipper for converting a copy protected DVD to a playable and backup burnable ".iso" file.

Article number three covers the use of MacTheRipper for importing the video off a non-copy protected DVD that you may have burned or was recorded in a Camcorder, etc.

While these articles from a year ago were written primarily for then latest MediaGate MG35 player device (there is a newer model that for about twice the price has wireless... although this one works great via wireless using an Airport Express for the wireless bridge) - you don't need one to use the tips to play videos on or through our Mac or other similar players as well.

Hope you enjoy!

We've got dozens of Quick Tips from the last couple years - and plenty that are as useful today as when first published. You can check them out, online, in our Quick Tips Archive.

Closing:
It's amazing how time flies. Already, nearly a day closer to 2007 than when I started my final push on completing this latest newsletter.

I really enjoy writing these up and it's a real privilege to have you taking to time to read these tidbits I've have to share.

Got some great things in store for the newsletter in 2007 - including a significant facelift that ought to make this an even easier read... and while still maintaining the nice text content focus. It doesn't take fancy HTML graphics and images to make a newsletter. While I've considered adding images to the Tips n' Deals - worry not - no plans to do so. Limited use would be good... but I'm not so good at holding myself back. Knowing me like I should know me, if I started with one image - there'd be 100 of them getting posted in before long. Going to keep it clean and on the text content focused.

So - no doubt there will be plenty from Apple, OWC, NewerTech, etc - in to keep the inspiration alive with a nice flow of our Tips n' Deals newsletters flowing out during 2007 and well beyond.

Again - a huge thanks for reading... if no one read, I'd have no reason or enjoyment in the wee hours to be typing this away. Most thankful and appreciative for it.

Have a great, safe New Years and see ya in 2007.

P.S. due to the wee hours... I apologize for any possible typos and grammar that might have slipped in through between the brain to hands to key execution phases. :)
