If your Mac has 2GB or less memory and is capable of supporting more memory than whateve that current amount is, substantial performance gains can be had from a simple memory upgrade. Memory is way off where by real cost it ought to be and that makes it an ever greater value when it comes from the benefit more memory provides. Right now we're seeing some DDR3 pricing move upwards while DDR2 and DDR1 are off recent highs. At some point, when supply comes into balance (which will happen by production adjustments or some of these chip makers simply being out of the chip making business), memory prices will realistically be as much as double the costs we have today... and even then, will still be a great purchase. This is the absolute longest downturn ever in the memory market and that's good for all of us with respect to making every dollar go as far as possible. It's a win, win since with respect to the savings of this performance booster which also makes your current Mac able to run faster and serve a greater need for a longer time.

Once you've got enough memory - a faster hard drive is the next thing you can do to boost performance. Today's higher capacity 2.5" and 3.5" hard drives don't just give you more room to store files, they also provide much higher data rates as a result of higher data density on the disc media inside. But we're talking memory first & having enough memory is the first thing to ensure you are maximizing your Mac's performance.
