OWC Tips & Deals 8/06/2004

Intro:

Hello again from Other World Computing. Sorry it's been a bit longer than usual between our normal e-mailings, it's become a rather busy summer here. And I do dare say 'summer' - we've actually had a couple nice weekends with temps actually rising to the normal summer range. True 'summer' days that also happen to coincide with the weekend have been rare in deed and difficult to not make the best of with lots of little projects to do around the house. By no means has there been any slacking at OWC though either - there has been so much going on these past weeks and definitely not any sort of 'summer lull'. In many ways, just not a typical summer.

Anyway, starting off, our Airport Express units have arrived! After getting the Airport Express going and now all excited to try Airtunes via the digital optical out provided, I found I'd missed a minor detail. While I thought it had a Toslink Digital port, it actually has an analog/mini-optical port. This port allows either a 3.5mm analog mini-audio plug or a digital mini-optical to provide the audio out and you can get both cable types for $39 in the Monster Audio cable Kit from Apple. I don't think so. Next week we will have mini-optical to Toslink Digital cables in stock in 1/2/3 Meter lengths from $9.95 to $15.95. Already have a Toslink cable you want to use? We'll have mini-optical to Toslink adapters for under $4. And if you just want the good ole analog cable solution - we have those now, mini-jack to RCA L/R, in stock for $4.99! So next newsletter is when I'll be going into detail on the AirTunes experience - that's this weekend's 'after hours, sleepless night' project. :)

So what about the Airport Express for Wireless you ask - well it ROCKS! Plug it in, use the Apple auto config utility - and you're good to go wireless. Setting it up to extend the wireless range/coverage of an existing Airport network is equally painless - click - click - done. For the third time in as many newsletters I've just got to say that this is the another winner out of Cupertino. Great for home, this is also your new traveling wireless solution. So small, so simple, with the Airport Express you'll even have the freedom of wireless when you're on the road. Just plug the available broadband connection into it instead of your laptop - and look Ma, no strings - er cables. :) A little better than the 3-4 weeks quoted the last time I checked, 2-3 weeks is still a bit of time if your anxious to get going Express Wireless... So, check with your local Apple Store. We've been able to confirm regular weekly shipments keeping the product available to pickup at Apple Store retail locations even while there's the wait via the virtual one.

Normally, I'd just put this in the deals part of the newsletter. This week, well drop a few of the highlights in right up here. There's been a bunch of new price drops on existing product lines, some great new products/deals we've picked up, and well - some great values for up to the front. Although it didn't specically talk about the 'Nigerian Free Money' type scams, the Quick Tip we did last time on scam e-mails in general resulted in reader e-mails with links to entertaining articles with the scammers being conned. In this example, the scammer even paid their would be victum - in this other, well, it's some pretty silly dialogue that's a fun read upon itself. For someone who thinks he's found a sucker to con, it just doesn't getter better when that scammer falls for the con themself - short of criminal prosecution.

Switching back to a more serious track, lets think good thoughts for our famed leader, Steve Jobs, during the month. This past weekend Mr. Jobs advised sent a company wide e-mail advising that he had just completed successful surgery for the removal of a cancerous tumor from his pancreas. Having been diagnosed early, he advised that the cancer was cured with that surgery. Quite thankfully without chemo or radiation therapies needed. He'll be taking a break this month to recuperate to return to normal duties in September, just in time to introduce those new iMac G5s.

I think that's enough for this week, this 'intro' having run on long enough. Need to save some material for next week's. :) But there's still more to come as always and starting with a Quick Tip looking at iPhoto v4.x vs v2.x, a couple new Music on the Mac articles saved up, and Reader Specials with even more goodie deals. As always thanks for being a Tips n' Deals Subscriber!

Quick Tip: iPhoto 4 = Welcome Speed

It wasn't too long ago I talked about web publishing with iPhoto 2. At that time, I mentioned doing a follow up comparing to iPhoto 4. Although I haven't had the chance to upgrade yet - OWC's Jamie Dresser has been using iPhoto 4 and now just back from vacation with a slug of great photos to share, well - the perfect opportunity on his take.

For me, iPhoto 2 worked great at first - but got slower and slower as I loaded it with more and more photos. Even despite the beach ball effect, I can't say that I didn't like iPhoto 2 and in truth there was nothing else I've really used to compare it to. Well - I can tell you right now, I'm upgrading to iPhoto 4. All the features and more of iPhoto 2, more speed than iPhoto 2 ever had. Just checking it out a little - well - it's like going from a single engine prop plane to an intercontinental jet. If for no other reason, the incredible performance the apparently very well writtin iPhoto 4 offers makes it worth the price of iLife 2004 - even if you're not going to use all the other apps iLife is more known and talked about for. I think you'll enjoy reading Jamie's take and quick tips on using iPhoto 4 and especially the great photos he's put up to share as well!

Music on the Mac 8/6 - Be a 'MasterWriter' & a Mic that's Right

Greetings from www.macsales.com/music

This week we are taking a close look at a breakthrough product called Masterwriter. It is a comprehensive and unique application aimed at songwriters and lyricists, both amateur and professional! It includes a long list of tools designed to help you stay focused on the creative process while saving and organizing everything you create. It contains a Rhyming Dictionary, Pop Culture Dictionary, Rhymed Phrases Dictionary, stereo hard disc recorder and much more!

There is nothing else like this for songwriters and the people who designed this highly useful product understand the needs of the songwriter very well. The rhymes, phrases and ideas contained in Masterwriter serve as an inspirational tool.

The process begins with a new song. Type in the title and start typing your lyrics. When you get to a point where you are searching for a rhyme for a word, double click on the word to select it. At this point, you can find rhymes in a wide variety of categories such as exact rhymes, secondary rhymes, rhymed phrases, alternate pronunciation rhymes and more. Let's take the word "aching" as an example. Obvious rhymes such as breaking are available. If you switch to Alternate Pronunciation for "achin" you get rhymes such as shaken, bacon, cajun and so much more. There is a Pop Reference collection of People, Places, Events, Products that is also quite unique. The Bermuda Triangle, Cape Kennedy, Levi, Atlantis, Adidas, Chevy are all possible ideas for your song lyrics. There is even a special category called Born In The USA. It contains the names of the myriad number of things uniquely American or created originally in the US such as the Blues, Juke Box, TV Shows, Cowboys, the Electric guitar, etc.

Once you have clicked on your choices for the word you want to rhyme, those choices are saved with your song. You can view them at any time for inclusion or inspiration for your lyrics.

Another great feature is the hard disc recorder. This looks like and operates just like a simple cassette recorder. You can use your built in mic to record a rough version of your song as you sit at your computer. There are a whole group of drum loops in various styles provided too so you can get a groove going as you record. You can also import a music track into the recorder and sing along with it.

There are so many features that it is hard to mention every one in an overview such as this. One last feature that I think is important is called Songuard. Songuard is an online archive of songs you create. When you save your song to the online Songuard database, Masterwriter stamps that file with a date of creation " time stamp". This is not a substitute for Copywriting your work, but rather, an interim step to protect your creative work. It will also be helpful if any debate should ever arise about who created a particular song idea first.

As a composer/songwriter myself, I am truly "blown away" by how incredibly useful and easy to use this application is. I would never want to be without it again. How many applications do you feel that way about? This one is a winner! It's no wonder Masterwriter won a BEST OF SHOW AWARD at Mac World Expo.

***************

The music department has been waiting patiently for the arrival of a new microphone from M-Audio called the Nova and it has finally arrived! It is an inexpensive but very high quality condenser mic designed for recording applications. How much does it cost, you ask? Although it has a suggested retail of $129.95, the OWC music department is pleased to make it available for $99 - for which you get a lot of mic for the money. Let's take a closer look at its features!

I was immediately impressed by the solid feel of this solid brass capsule mic. It is attractive and well built. The specs are quite good also. The frequency response is listed at 20Hz to 18kHz. In lay persons terms, that means it will pick up sounds from 20Hz (below the lowest note on a piano or bass) to slightly above the range of human hearing. This mic is an excellent choice for an "all-around" mic for the home recordist! It would be great for a variety of sound sources where hi fidelity is desired. It would be equally at home on acoustic guitar, male or female vocal, in front of a guitar amp or on any brass or woodwind. This mic requires 48Volt phantom power. This (phantom power for the mic) is found on most mic preamps and it is typically switchable - on or off per channel. The specs also feature a 1.1 " evaporated gold diaphragm. The gold is used because it does not rust and its electrical resistance is stable. The condenser mic diaphragm, in general, is capable of picking up detail and nuance and is typically used in recording studios. Other types of mics called dynamic mics, such as the venerable Shure SM57, are more often used in a live music setting for various reasons relating to volume levels, handling noise and rejection of off-axis sound, such as the sound from other nearby instruments. The Class-A electronics in the Nova are designed for very low noise and coloration of the sound. The low noise is important because each device in the signal path adds "some" noise to the overall "noise floor" of your system. In the old days of tape recording, the typical noise floor was a little higher than it is now in the digital age. Also, most mics do impart a "sonic character" to the signal, sometimes good, sometimes not so good. Having a "transparent " design means that the mic will reproduce the sound source as faithfully as possible. Many producers actually use various mics exactly "because" they will impart a certain sound. Choosing the right mic for a specific singer is almost like casting a role in a movie. This is a broad topic and I feel that most people starting out will be well served by choosing a fairly transparent mic such as the Nova. The Nova also comes with a mic cable, stand mount and soft case.

At this price, this mic is a sure winner for a great general purpose mic for your home set-up! I plan on adding one to my studio - immediately.

Closing:
Don't send a newsletter for a couple extra weeks and boy to the e-mails start coming. :) While normally I do work to put one out every 7-14 days, this time it just worked out to be a little longer. I'll make sure I make that up with a quicker succession of newsletters in these weeks to come.

On another front, if you use AOL and aren't getting our e-mail on the date it's titled, I'd sure like to know. From our July 15th newsletter send, which had some time sensitive offers, I received quite a few complaints about the newsletter arriving 5 to even 9 days after it had been sent. This was not an issue on our side as all those e-mails were confirmed sent on July 15th and all of the complaints came from those of you with an e-mail address @aol.com. Not sure what the problem was on their end, but if it recurs, I'd like to be all over it with them sighting the problems continuation.

So that's about it. We have a Dual 1.8GHz and 2.5GHz in the pipe that we'll add to our Benchmarks data here soon. Also - well, there's going to be some serious excitement in the processor upgrades segment here soon - so do stay tuned. As always, thank you for letting me send you our Tips n' Deals newsletter - and hey - have a great weekend!
