OWC Tips & Deals 08/15/2005

Intro:
Greeting from your friends at Other World Computing. A decent bit to cover as it has been a bit of time since last shot one of these out. Doesn't seem like it can already be mid-August. It's even more incredible for me to look at my new born son, who's now already in his eighth week. I think I'm starting to understand how and why time can really fly.

Apple
RIP Apple One Button Mouse, long live the One Button Mouse? Say hello the 'Mighty Mouse', Apple's new $49 One Button Scrolling Mouse that provides the functionality of 4 buttons. In addition to the scroll 'toggle/button' that lets you scroll left/right, up/down, and diagonally - the mouse features two pressure sensitive click points on the sides. Apple touts this unique product to be "unlike any other mouse on the market" and "designed just for Mac OS X Tiger." Leave it to Apple to find a way to keep it a one-button mouse. Call me old school, but I personally like the feedback from buttons that click.

Mac mini now delivers more for the same money. The entry level 1.25GHz, still at $499, now comes standard with 512MB up from 256MB. The 1.42GHz model still starts from $599, but in addition to also being bumped to 512MB, now standard is BlueTooth & 802.11G Airport Extreme built-in. If you're in the market - I'd suggest simply skipping the 1.25GHz model. Just adding the Bluetook and Wireless to the 1.25GHz bumps your cost to $598. And it's another $50 to upgrade the 1.25GHz from a 40GB to an 80GB HD - $49 more than the cost to get all of that in the base 1.42GHz model. Hmmm.

Picking out an iPod should be a little simpler now. It's now simply iPod, iPod mini, or iPod Shuffle. Gone are the iPod Photo models as now color is standard for the 'basic' iPod. Featuring that nice 2" Color LCD, the 20GB model is $299 and the 60GB is $399. So you can see your Album covers in color or use it for Digital Photos too. Like the discontinued iPod Photo, an optional Camera Connector allows the direct connection of a digital camera for directly downloading and viewing of images. Perhaps the iPod Photo will live again - and this time actually be able to take photos too. One quick note, the U2 Edition iPod is also now with the 2" color screen.

Apple denied iPod Patent! A patent Apple requested in September of 2002 for the iPod's rotational wheel was recently rejected. Seems Microsoft received a patent for a filing they did five months sooner for a method of generating media playlists which was deemed similar enough to that which Apple sought. It shouldn't be that big of a deal as it is expected Apple will be able make some tweaks in their application and still get the desired patent protection. In a worst case though, it would be really bad news if Microsoft actually had something on Apple they could sue over.

NewerTech:
The perfect upgrade for the Mac mini is now available! Introducing the NewerTech miniStack - from $99.95 for 0GB Kit, $139.99 - $499.99 for complete solutions up to 500GB. More than just a fully bootable, High-Performance FireWire/USB2 Hard Drive - the miniStack also incorporates integrated USB2 and FireWire Hubs to add support for extra devices and all in a unit only 1.5" tall and the same width/length of the mini to fit perfectly beneath it. Auto-Power circuitry turns the miniStack on when you power your mini and intelligent thermal monitoring keeps an internal fan running only at the speed needed to keep everything safe and cool. By a wide margin, this has become our hottest new storage product of 2005.

Better pricing and more run time for Apple iPods with NewerTech NuPower Apple iPod Battery Upgrade Replacements. For 1st and 2nd Gen iPods, the new 2200mAh battery is now available for $34.95 with 78% more runtime capacity than Apple's. 2100mAh and 1800mAh 1st/2nd Gen Batteries are now $29.99 and $19.99 while supplies last. NewerTech 600mAh for iPod mini (up to 50%+) is $24.95, 750mAh for 4th Gen is now $25.95(20%+), and 900mAh for all iPod Photo models/4th Gen 40GB model (28%+/45%+) now $29.95. Save up to an extra $10 when you buy a NewerTech iPod battery and either the RoadTrip! FM Transmitter ($14.99) or RoadTrip! FM Transmitter + iPod Charger ($27.95) on the same order by using coupon code 'HIGHROAD'.

OWC now offers the installation of NewerTech iPod batteries for $39. Regardless of which model you own, for the cost of the battery + $39, OWC provides a return box and covers FedEx overnight shipment both to and from your location. Compared to the Apple exchange program, not only do you end up with a higher-capacity and longer running battery - you also get your same iPod back with all it's data, etc.

That Puppy has a Name
Thanks for all your help and support in naming our new 'Working Class Dog'. Having fetched over 1/3rd of your votes, this cute gal is now answering to the name of 'Pismo'. Pismo's training soon begins so that in another year or so, she'll join the ranks of Mac (our first WCD Pup) and be helping a child who needs her.

Of Interest and/or for Fun:
Fun and/or of Interest: Hard drive storage is breaking new limits and this Hitachi video helps explain how. Get Perpendicular!

I'd be surprised if you hadn't followed NASA's Discovery Shuttle mission. And pretty likely you also noted the Comet Impact mission last month too... What you may not be aware of is the lawsuit over that Comet 'incident'. NASA has been sued and among other things, the plaintiff asks "If your phone went down this morning, ask yourself Why? and then get in touch with us."

How about that - let your Mac minis take the wheel.

Been some misunderstanding about this, but factually it's a great time to get a fantastic look at the 'Red Planet'. Not the first or the last time... Still a great time to check out Mars. :)

Quick Tip: Take 'your Mac' with you, without taking your Mac

Although I tried to leave work 'at work' before my son was born, it's been a good thing that I can work from home just like being at the office since. Today's various technologies definitely make this a reality. And part of that reality is the extreme robustness of Apple's OS X.

Unbeknownst to many, when you install OS X on one Mac - you can typically use the same volume to boot up just the same on any other Mac that supports the version of OS X you are using. Be it an iMac G3/500 or a PowerMac G4 Quicksilver or a Powerbook G4 Titanium, an iMac G5, a PowerMac G5 - the same OS install will work between all of them.

Consider this - you've cloned your main drive to a FireWire drive. And your main PowerMac goes poof... Or it's a PowerBook or iBook that just got stolen. With that FireWire drive clone, you can now go to most any Mac model with a FireWire port and boot that drive. No software updates or reinstalls, just plug in, and tell it to start up from your drive.

Or, for practical use too. I use my Elite 800 to boot up at home and at the office. As my main work drive - I've got it all the same just carrying this simple drive back and forth. When I need to take my Powerbook for a trip, I just sync to the internal drive there and now I've got the comfort of knowing an up the last second backup sits at home should something go wrong on the road.

And there is no discounting the value of a good backup. As good as hard drives are today, I can not repeat myself enough when it comes to pointing out they are still the most likely component to experience critical failure. It's a mechanical device with components moving at high speeds. And besides the possibility of a mechanical failure, there's always user error.

I made error of my own in fact. For whatever reason, the PowerMac at the office didn't shutdown - but logged itself out. Took the drive home, booted from it - no problems at all. That was until I went back to the office two days later - and plugged back in. In my hurry I missed the pulsating sleep light - and failed to notice it didn't bong when I hit the power button. After making my rounds through the office, sat down to the normal log in screen that I expected was from the startup, not just a wake from sleep. Long story short - the system at work continued right from where it had left off and that meant data pointers wiping about two days worth of work as well as corrupting my Entourage database. See - I used it for about 10 minutes before figuring out what had to have happened.

Two things made recovery easy. The first, was a good backup to start from. The 2nd was Prosoft's Drive Genius - which returned the previously hosed and unmountable volume back to a normal state that could even boot up again - allowing an easy copy recovery of that data I didn't have on the backup.

Whether it's an actual drive going down or you making a mistake of your own - it's all about being prepared. What could have been disaster was reduced to just an inconvenience because had the backup to go back to and the software tools to recover what the backup didn't.

For my own needs, I've got my cake and can eat it too when it comes to taking 'my Mac' with me, but only having to carry the FireWire Drive around to have that. Needless to say, I watch to make darn sure it's shut down and not sleeping. Still - stuff happens, being prepared just makes it part of the routine.

Memory Specials & Price Trend Report:
August 15th, 2005: Prices are still darn reasonable, but memory prices have been ticking up. Truth be told though, there is no crystal ball for this stuff - but I can advise that the memory deals we've got now are pretty darn good if you can use more... Music on the Mac 8/13/2005 - ProTools now 'M-Powered'

Greetings from www.macsales.com/music

M-Audio recently released Pro Tools M-Powered. What is that you ask? It's exciting news because Pro Tools recording software, arguably the most widely used application of its kind in the world, is now available for the many users of M-Audio hardware. In the past, Pro Tools would only work with its own Digidesign hardware.

The popular MBox hardware/software package is Digidesign's entry level system. The MBox and associated Pro Tools LE software are fantastic products to be sure but there are many people out there who already have M-Audio audio cards or mobile FireWire audio interfaces and those people can now get Pro Tools software to use with their hardware. Pro Tools sessions made with this new version for M-Audio are fully compatible with Pro Tools studios and users worldwide. It is incredibly convenient to be able to work in this powerful recording environment in your home studio and then be able to take that session to almost any studio in the world! From Helsinki Finland to Helena, Montana...Bath, England to Tokyo....Pro Tools is everywhere!

Pro Tools M-Powered is virtually the same as the popular Pro Tools LE that comes with Digidesign's MBox and 002 systems. You get 32 tracks of audio recording plus 256 midi tracks too. That should be more than enough power to record your masterpiece. Imagine what the Beatles could have done with this capability, especially considering that they only had 4 tracks to work with most of the time (and a truckload of talent LOL). This software works with all of M-Audio's FireWire interfaces and with their popular PCI card based Audiophile 2496 and Audiophile 192 systems.

Pro Tools M-Powered also comes with more than 30 great plug-ins including reverbs, delays, EQ, dynamics and many more. The system is compatible with a huge range of Digidesign Partner plug-ins too including mastering tools like iZotope's Ozone 3 and virtual instruments such as GForce Oddity and Minimonsta.

M-Powered is also ReWire capable. That means it can connect virtually with other ReWire capable apps such as Ableton Live. The output stream from tracks in Live will show up as individual tracks in your Pro Tools session. You get the best of both worlds, the time stretch and remix capabilities of Live along with deep editing and recording features of Pro Tools. Pro Tools M-Powered works with both Mac OSX and Widows XP systems. We've even got a great price on Pro Tools M-Powered too.

Many were wondering what would happen when Avid, the parent company of Digidesign with Pro Tools, purchased M-Audio. The answer is becoming clear...more capabilities and cross platform compatibility for the end user. More power at affordable prices truly equals "power to the people" !! Check it out - you can now subscribe to my new 'PodCast' "Rock Your Computer".

Closing:
I remember being in school and how the days seemed to just drag on by as I waited for the summer break. And then break would come and go in a flash. The reality is the days that came before and after went just as fast, it was only the fixation on a point that distracted from how fast it was all going by.

My wife and I are blessed with a precious gift. And watching him already growing so fast and the weeks (more than seven so far) roll by, I am just getting a taste of that 'they grow up so fast'. Every day is amazing and I am ever more thankful.

It's not all easy at the get go... Sleep is definitely one thing you don't get for the first few weeks - maybe months, but it all starts to come into balance. No matter what - he's the center of my universe and gives me a whole new inspiration in all that I do.

These are the photos offered up in the July 2nd Newsletter when he was just at a week.

New Photos from 7lbs 10oz then to 12 pounds now! Mama's milk definitely got the right stuff.

I can barely stop myself from offering... But no obligation to look. :)

Thanks for being a subscriber and of course reading. I sincerely appreciate it and for sure, it's why I keep writing -for better or worse- :). Anyway, hope these winding down days of summer and beyond find you well.
