OWC Tips & Deals 09/19/2005
Intro: Greetings from Woodstock. Words just don't do it for the destruction left in the wake of hurricane Katrina, nor the remembrance of 9/11. We thank all our friends abroad once again for their assistance. After 9/11, we said we'd never let something like that happen again and I hope make the same true of all we've seen of this natural disaster as well. It's unfortunate that it has to happen first before it can then not happen again. For our small part, we at OWC are proud to have helped the Katrina victims through donations to the American Red Cross. This and other fine charities give help and hope to the over one million fellow Americans displaced and left homeless. We can't turn back the clock and use that 20/20 hindsight to prevent what's past, but certainly we can do to help see the pieces picked up. For those interested in helping out, we've posted a brief page with several verified charities as well as tips for avoiding those that are less than charitable. Apple: Otherwise speechless, I think the word 'wow' best describes Apple's new iPod! Say goodbye to iPod mini - say hello to iPod Nano! At $199 for 2GB and $249 for 4GB, this replacement for the iPod mini is fully featured with the additional of a sharp color display, but totally slimmed down to just 1.6" x 3.5" by just 0.27" thick! 4GB of storage is anything but 'nano' allowing you up to 1000 songs in that top end offering. And that's just the beginning given the way storage technology is advancing, 10GB or 20GB could very well be in an iPod Nano in the nest year or so. Regardless of tomorrow, the size, look, and features of the iPod Nano available now already makes it today's rave. Long expected, but introduced with far less fanfare, is the new Apple iTunes 'ROKR' phone now available for $249.99 + 2yr service contract from Cingular. Like many a phone out there, this one takes pictures, allows calls - and is the first and only supported by iTunes allowing up to 100 songs stored. Personally, I'm doing just fine with the phone I have and my iPod as separate devices. Besides - at least for now, bet that ROKR is pretty well grounded for listening to your tunes on an airline flight. The concept has a lot of potential, and ROKR is a start - but for now, it's an easy pass IMHO. Take a Mac mini for a Test Drive, on August 31st Apple launched a 30 Day Test Drive program to win new converts. This program, that provided a 30 Day 100% refund opportunity to customer's that would choose to return the Mac mini and optionally Apple Keyboard/Mouse accessories, was abruptly cancelled without any explanation just a day later. Very uncharacteristic for Apple. If you're thinking about buying a new Powerbook, now might be a good time to wait - wait for what's next. It's a toss up if the new, improved models will be released at Apple Paris Expo this week, but all indications are that a new Powerbook featuring the new 7448 processor with speeds of up to 2.0GHz is imminent. Compared to the 7447 in current Apple laptops, the 7448 uses less power and benefits from 1MB of L2 1:1 Cache, doubling the 7447's 512K. With that L2 Cache increase, lower power consumption, and higher speed - we're talking more than just a minor speed up to say the least. And what's more... Well, you can read more in the processor upgrades section. :) Processor Upgrades: With the coming transition from PPC to Intel processor based Macs, processor upgrades have never made more sense. Far less than the cost of a new machine + without the costs of upgrading the memory, etc all anew, such upgrades make a lot of sense with consideration to the larger investment in a new system that may just be obsolete in nine months. That said - In any given month, upgrades are either getting faster, going down in price, or both. Thus far September delivers new lower PowerLogix upgrade prices. Single G4/1.6GHz now from $269, Dual G4/1.6GHz from $459 Dual G4/1.7GHz from $549; Single 1.8GHz from $329 Dual G4/1.8GHz from $599; and Single 2.0GHz now $369 standard price. See Reader Specials for better... All PowerLogix G4/7447 Upgrades are backed by a 30 Day 100% guarantee and 3yr OWC supported Warranty. Within 30 days, if you can bring yourself to give up the new upgrade speed, a full refund is provided. See the full PowerLogix Upgrade Line. What's next? These current 7447s really rock, but we're about to go to a whole new generation with the 7448s. Cost will be higher, but hold on to your cap - cause it's in proportion to an even larger boost in performance. NewerTech: It's been just over a year since we introduced our RoadTrip! FM Transmitter product. A simple solution that sounds great while be easy to use for listening to your iPod while on the road. We followed this product up with the RoadTrip!+ FM Transmitter with iPod Charger, making what is good even better. And now, the most common request we have for this product line has been fulfilled. Whether it be the $14.95 FM Only or $27.95 FM+Charger model, you can now use either in the comfort of your home with the 120v to 12v Auto Power Adapter. This sleek home accessory lets you use your RoadTrip!, as well as many other 12v Car/Auto accessories right from a standard US 120V standard home outlet. OWC NEWS: Xpostfacto 4.0 is now official! Just because Apple doesn't support it, does not mean you can't use it. This latest Xpostfacto release version lets you run up to the Apple's latest OS X 'Tiger' 10.4.x on many models that Apple doesn't. This includes some recently orphaned Powerbooks, iMacs, and PowerMac G3 models - as well as Legacy PCI Macs like 7300-9600 models too! With a decent processor installed, even a Mac from 10 years ago can run Apple's most modern OS and do it well too. :) OWC Mercury On-The-Go 2.5" Portables now available in new 120GB size! Starting from $129.99 for 40GB, these highly acclaimed 'fit in your shirt pocket' less than 12 ounce solutions give you high speed FireWire and USB2 'on-the-go'. The $279.99 100GB 5400RPM model remains a MacWorld Editor's choice, as reaffirmed in the Oct/05 issue, and the 120GB follows in those footsteps at with an extra 20% of capacity for the cost of $349.99. In the October/2005 Issue - Macworld has awarded our OWC Mercury Elite-AL a nice 4.5 out of 5 Mice! This, part our latest new FireWire line up to 1TB, is an awesome performer as well as a looker with it solid aluminum construct and G5 inspired design. And pictures just don't do this product justice - need to have one for yourself to see how much style as well as real substance this new Elite-AL line provides. Another request fulfilled, check out the latest OS X icons for all our OWC Mercury and Neptune Storage products. A special thanks to M. Chris Stevens in tech for doing such a fantastic job on them! The linked page includes both the icons file as well as the easy instructions for putting them in place. And finally - thank you for making us what we are. OWC is evolved from the feedback and suggestions that you, our customer provide. It's clearly made a difference as now, for the 2nd consecutive year, OWC was selected as one of only 30 merchants - out of many thousands - to be named a 'Circle of Excellence Gold Honoree'! Bizrate's own explanation of this award includes "With so many online stores, which stores really are the "best of the best?" In answer to this question, BizRate.com is proud to present this year's Circle of Excellence Award Gold Honoree Winners...". Thank you very much for helping us serve you best! ATI and Mac Video Cards A little over two months ago, ATI announced the discontinuation of: ATI Radeon 9000 Pro Mac Edition 128MB 2X/4X AGP for PowerMac G4 and ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition 128MB 2X/4X AGP for PowerMac G4. By the end of July, all the remaining stock we had of these models was completely exhausted. In mid-August, the new $199 Radeon Pro 9600 Mac & PC Edition 256MB 4X/8X AGP Video Card was released. OWC was one of the very first to receive stock with our first shipments going out to customers just last week. This card is quite a value, feature rich and very decent performance for the cost. It's also the first and only video card for PowerMac G4 models Digital Audio, QuickSilver, and Mirrored Drive Door to support dual-link LCDs like Apple's 30" Cinema LCD. Also compatible with all PowerMac G5 Models (never mind 4X/8X PCs), this card is half the price of any other available dual-link supportive solution. All in all, a darn decent video card value. Uh oh - what about video for PowerMac G4 AGP Graphics/Sawtooth and Gigabit Ethernet? Those models have a 2X slot which is not compatible for use with this new 9600. Really makes you wonder why ATI nixed the 9000, taking away not just the lower end for 4X capable Macs - but 2X all the way. The Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition 128MB for G4, however, is supposed to be coming back as a 256MB version which will remain compatible for these 2X AGP slot models as well as to offer a step up option for 4X capable Macs over the 9600. If not or you can't wait - the only other 'legitimate' new option is the Radeon 9200 Mac Edition 128MB PCI. It's actually faster than the ATI Rage Pro 16MB AGP card - but I'd still hold out for a true AGP card unless all that's needed is additional display capability. We'll be watching and also working on other solutions to advise if ATI doesn't take care of things. Click 'here' for the currently available line of Apple/Mac Video cards. Of Interest and/or for Fun: Sometimes it's hard to grasp just how far technology has advance over the past 20 years. Engadget's circa 1985 edition certainly provides perspective. See Gates get burned.... How Control-Alt-Delete, for rebooting PC's was born. Apple making real gains with businesses. What happens when you advertise you're giving away Apple iBooks for just $50? You get a stampede! I'm sure the intentions were good, but tell that to the Tax Payers who would have recouped three to six times that value at fair market and without the dangerous mob scene that the Henricho County blow out brought together. Intro Closing: Really tried to get this latest edition published a bit sooner, but honestly found it difficult to write with some of the other happenings. Even so, closed the gap a little and will be working to bring the frequency back up to the old 2-3 per month norm. And - if anything comes out of the Paris show this week, you can bet I'll be quick to report. Still ahead, a detailed look at bootable HD cloning in our latest Quick Tip, the latest Reader Exclusive Specials, and the latest Music on the Mac by Roger Adler. Thanks for reading and our thoughts and prayers to all those displaced by hurricane Katrina. You get more and pay less with www.FasterMac.net Quick Tip: Options to backup 'Clone' of your hard drive Last time I expounded on the marvel of hard disk cloning. Unlike a traditional backup, a clone backup is one you can boot from. And if you do it with a FireWire drive - not only can you use it to boot from the Mac you've backed up - but virtually any FireWire equipped Mac that is compatible with the version of OS X you have. As I've personally noted - at different locations and for different reasons, I use the same drive to boot two different PowerMac models and a PowerBook - that's the cool portability aspect of OS X on a FireWire Drive. I also use cloned backup so should I ever have a problem with the drive I tote around - or if on the road with my PowerBook, the internal drive has a problem or the entire book were to be stolen - I always know I can boot up to a backup and be off to the races with all the data intact to the point of that last backup clone... Anyway, enough rehash from that 8/15 Quicktip. Having talked about cloning, I got a ton of e-mails about cloning and it was clearly time for a brand new article on today's options for cloning your hard drive. Two+ years ago, when we last discussed this fantastic backup option, the only application that really did it right was Carbon Copy Cloner. The bad news is that CCC hasn't been updated for nearly two years since Apple hired Mike Bombich, the author of CCC, away. The Good News is that there are now several options for cloning available and our own M. Chris Stevens has done a fantastic overview of six different methods/options just for you. Music on the Mac 9/19/2005 - Deal of the Year & Real World Solutions Greetings from www.macsales.com/music Attention: USB audio/midi Deal of the Year! How so? We are featuring fantastic Blow Out pricing on three must have products from DVForge. They are the GarageKey 37 key midi keyboard controller, the MicPlug USB mic interface and GuitarPlug USB guitar interface. These are incredibly low priced tools to get audio and midi into your computer. The GarageKey, at just $79.00, is the best deal around when it comes to a keyboard capable of playing all the virtual instruments in GarageBand and other applications. It's velocity sensitive, which means it senses how hard or softly you play and even includes a built in stand. It is a clean white design that looks great and works well. The GuitarPlug is a handy and small device that plugs into your guitars output jack and converts the high impedance guitar signal to USB for use in GarageBand or other applications. This is a basic interface with only an on off button. It's a no-brainer and works as advertised...and it's only $19.00 - WOW! The MicPlug is designed to convert the low impedance signal from a dynamic mic to USB and is also only $19.00 - INCREDIBLE! Here you have 3 solutions that are unbelievably affordable and do the job. Buy one, two or all 3 and you are in business with the right tools to get creative. These seem to me to be the most cost effective way to get GarageBand up and running.......Rock ON People ! --------------- Real World Solutions! Why the headline? I just had an experience with products that we offer that was groundbreaking and extremely useful. I have done overviews of both the Brian Moore Guitars iGuitar and M-Audio Black Box in recent months. What is significant in my world as a professional guitarist/producer is how well these products work TOGETHER in my day to day life...hence the headline. I just last week travelled to Las Vegas (nope-didn't gamble even 1 cent) to play for the Virtuoso Awards at the beautiful Bellagio Hotel. This kind of gig is standard practice for me and involves traveling with my guitars and amps. ( can be a real hassle these days ) The iGuitar is an extremely useful tool because it can get both and electric AND acoustic guitar sound at the same time in addition to being able to play "synth" sounds too with its midi output. This particular event called for all of these sounds and I had it covered. One guitar covered it all. May I also say the guitar is beautiful and looks good onstage too. More groundbreaking was the use of M-Audio's Black Box. At this point in my career, it's fair to say I have played through and owned about every great guitar/ampllfier combination. I also own guitar amp modeling products from Line 6 (POD). For the first time ever, I took only an M-Audio Black Box as my "amp" and plugged it in to a basic guitar amp that was rented in Vegas. I didn't have to worry about getting "my sounds" because I had already preprogrammed each amp/effect combination in the Black Box and saved each as a preset. I could easily and instantly switch from a clean unprocessed sound to a Marshall stack type of sound with effects too. I had presets for a variety of sounds ready to go. This box, co-designed by Roger Linn ( a guitar player and inventor of note too) and M-Audio really sounds incredible. I am somewhat demanding about amp tone and this box just seems to sound better than the rest. All the classic Fender and Marshall type tones and effects like delay and Leslie speaker are covered beautifully. My peers commented on it too---a nice thing to hear from people you respect. Consider the fact that I carried my "amp" in the pocket of my guitar case through the airport and onto the plane too...so convenient. M-Audio Black Box and an iGuitar are THE ultimate set-up...on the road or at home! Check it out - you can now subscribe to my new 'PodCast' "Rock Your Computer". Closing: With all that has happened in the world, I am ever more thankful for my son, family, and friends. It's hard to imagine loosing everything to a natural disaster like Katrina, but I'd certainly give it all up for those I love. Houses can be rebuilt, personal effects replaced - loved ones can not. Certainly feel for those that lost loved ones and give support to those who's loses are of such that can be replaced. This is America and the generosity of our people as well as friends abroad provide more than hope, but I believe a support a true confidence that we will see these people's lives rebuilt. Further, I have no doubt that the rebuilding of all that surrounds will be such that this will not happen to the like again. And then there's the whole gas an oil 'supply crisis'. Perceived or real, the oil companies are clearing raking it in - but that's not really their fault as it's us consumers that drive the demand that saps the supply and gives support to those rising prices. But from what I've read - it's as much the demand for oil as the capacity to refine it that affects cost. Due to environmental conflicts - no new oil refineries have been built in the US since the 1970s. So we also depend on imports for our distillate fuel needs(Gas, etc) as well. We've kind of got a catch 22. Environmental concerns have prevented the construction of new distillate refineries, but new facilities would be more environmentally friendly as well as more efficient and cost effective as well. Too bad some compromise couldn't be reached for every two new refineries, one old one got taken off line or something. Regardless - the oil/gas situation is one of our own making... can't blame anyone but ourselves. We want our cake and to eat it too - as long as we need to consume it, we'll be subject to the whims of it. Plenty of alternatives that result in less use either by means of alternative fuels as well as choices of conservation too. Can't express how thankful I am for the gift of a child. It gives all of these things even more perspective as I want him to have a world of opportunity in a world worth living in. In the mean time, the main focus is just getting to know him. Every day is a blessing and every day he does something my wife and I haven't seen before. Today, for example, he for the first time starting sticking his tongue out. While I wouldn't encourage that of a child (or adult for that matter) - seeing him do it is just neato. Most amazing watching his personality develop and how he's starting to get that motor control down pat. His learning chair has three different color activators that make color lights flash and music with words play. Initially he just swatted to make the noise and light happen, but now he's starting to actually grab on to pull the pieces to where the noise/light results. New Photos from new born to roughly 7 weeks. I like showing him off.... And thus can't stop myself. No obligation to look though. Standard disclaimer. :) With that, will say goodbye until our next text encounter. Have a great week and remember to do what you can do for those those displaced by Katrina too.
