OWC Tips n' Deals 10/21/2005
Intro: Hello again from Woodstock. With the best of intentions to deliver a newsletter no less than twice a month, going to at least insure we get a minimum of one out per month. Family and events of late have made the normal writing a little more difficult than before. None the less... Really working on the balance to get this out just a tad bit more often. There really wasn't anything to report out of MacWorld France.... But about ten days ago, the floodgates sure opened with 'One More Thing'... :) Apple: Starting with 'One More Thing' - I want to definitely recommend watching the quicktime recording of the event. With Steve Jobs doing an excellent job as always, the presentation is both extremely informative as well as entertaining. Printed works are hardly a substitute, more a supplement, and the only one up is to see the new 'one more' stuff for yourself. One more thing - new iMac G5s: Faster processor speeds, faster and higher resolution video, slimmer profile + all models now standard with SuperDrive, built in Camera, Remote Control, and more... All of that standard and the 17" 1.9GHz model is now the new entry level for the same $1299 the less equipped 1.8GHz model had started from. And the 20" 2.1GHz model is offered from $1699, $100 less than the prior less equipped 2.0GHz model it replaces. Typical Apple Style - More Standard Features, More Speed, all for less cost. These new iMacs are the first to use DDR2 memory and are standard configed with 512MB on board and have one DDR2 Memory slot which will accept up to a 2GB module for a maximum of 2.5GB possible. Definitely want to have more than that base 512MB, and as we're right on top of things, it's a great idea to get the correct high quality DDR2 upgrade for that new iMac G5 from OWC - where you'll pay less than 50% that which Apple would charge for the same. :) With the new iMacs I did mention an included Remote Control... That's for the Apple's new Front Row application which is nothing short of totally cool. Simple remote control turns these new iMac G5s into music/video/photo/dvd media players via remote for 'across the room' convenience. And that built in camera comes with software for more than just video conferencing - the new 'Photo Booth' software provides fun effects and even flashes the screen for a variety of cool self portrait options. Fun and functional. One more thing - new iPod: The new 'iPod' 5th Generation is now here. Offered in 30GB and 60GB versions at $299 and $399 respectively(same prices the 4th Gen 20GB and 60GB had been), both new 5th Gen offerings are actually slimmer than even the 4G 20GB model had been, have a larger screen..... and add full 30 frame per second MPEG4 and H.264 video playback. Now you can play music, view photos, and watch high-quality video from a device that fits in the palm of your hand. Briefly played with one yesterday - and darn impressive! It surprised me and I surprised myself as I see myself possibly warming up to the whole iPod video concept. It's actually really good and just like you can do iPod audio to your stereo, connectivity is there to video from the new iPods via your TV. Still the standard for portable music, this video thing could really take off big and in a hurry... Something I'd not have thought before seeing the 5G in person. One more thing - iTunes 6: It's not just for tunes anymore. It only makes sense that if you can get an iPod that plays video - ought to be able to buy videos to watch on it. And now you can. Watch them on your Mac or watch them on that new iPod - music videos and even some new TV show episodes are available a day after first broadcast and for $1.99. Itunes 6.0.1 is the current version and a free download. Just like with music, can preview the videos before buying. Not bad. Other features for 6.0 are 'gifting' that let you send music with ease as a gift and customer comments on songs/videos. New Dual Core PowerMac G5: Instead of two separate processors for the Duals, IBM has put the power of two G5 processor cores on the new Dual Core G5 Processors... And in turn Apple replaced Dual Processor 2.0GHz, 2.5GHz, and 2.7GHz models with new single Dual-Core processor models 'Dual 2.0GHz' and 'Dual 2.3GHz' for the same $1999 and $2499 prices of the former, and the new top end is the dual dual-core 'Quad 2.5GHz' at $3299, a $300 increase from the previous Dual 2.7GHz model. It's a little confusing with the product naming. With the prior G5s - Dual 2.0Ghz meant 2 x 2.0GHz processor... Now - Dual means dual core and Quad means two dual core processors installed. The performance of a single Dual Core processor machine should be pretty comparable to true standard Dual Processor model of the same speed, maybe even faster depending on other architecture designs such as the use of DDR2 memory and PCI Express. As for the 'Quad 2.5' - Apple brags performance of up to 69% better depending on application vs. the Dual 2.7GHz... We will have machines soon and will add them to our online benchmarks. Anyway the new models ship standard with better video, new PCI Express Slots, 512MB of DDR2 Memory standard that is upgradeable to 16GB! You also have the option to use DDR2 ECC (error correction code) memory which improves system reliability for truly mission critical operations. These new Power Mac G5s require memory to be upgraded in pairs and we've got those matched DDR2 Pairs in stock for less than 50% of what Apple bills. Get your Mac from Apple and save a bundle on the top quality memory from OWC. :) New PowerBook G4: Am a bit disappointed... Really expected the new Freescale G4/7448 in these new models, guess that won't happen till later. The 12" is still at 1.5GHz, but now the $1499 price includes SuperDrive and a faster 5400RPM 80GB HD as standard. The new 15" and 17" models are a bit more exciting... Available from $1999($300 less) and $2499($200 less) respectively, both now feature exciting higher resolution LCDs, larger standard hard drives, standard 128MB ATI Video (that can support even the Apple 30"), and 8X SuperDrives w/Dual Layer DVD Burn support. And the beat goes on... More features for less cost. All three models offer 512MB Standard. For the 12" that is 256MB soldered + 256MB installed in the one DDR SO-DIMM slot to allow max possible 1.25GB if you replace that with a 1GB module. The truly new 15" and 17" models use the new DDR2 Memory type, standard configed with a 512MB module installed in one of two DDR2 SO-DIMM slots, up to 2GB of memory is possible. And just like the rest - OWC has the correct top notch memory for these models as well - and again for about 50% less than what Apple hits you up for. Apple is on one heck of a role. And the fanfare with which all these new G4 and G5 based Macs were introduced with almost leaves one forgetting about the Intel Macs expected next Summer. And perhaps by then, the processor will matter less than the OS. Seems more likely too that G4/G5 and Intel based systems may be offered as simultaneous options for a bit of time too. In another direction - wonder when the next new Mac mini with all those iMac features will arrive.... If such a mini arrives, we be talking TV set box time. Quite a flow of great, new products the past week and a half - and plenty more to come. ATI Video Cards Update Previously we have reported on the new ATI Radeon 9600 Mac & PC 256MB 4X/8X AGP video card that is now shipping for $199 and is compatible with PowerMac G4 Digital Audio, G4 QuickSilver, G4 MDD, and G5 Models. We also noted the summer discontinuation of the 2X/4X Radeon 9800 128MB and Radeon 9000 128MB MacEdition Cards. This effectively left no AGP Video options available to purchase for PowerMac G4 AGP Graphics/Sawtooth and Gigabit Ethernet models. Good News - ATI formally introduced the new 2X/4X Radeon 9800 MacEdition 256MB for all PowerMac G4 Models. We have been accepting backorders for several weeks and we will have ample stock to fill all orders of this $259 card by early next week. This card is fully Quartz Extreme enabled, Tiger Core Video accelerated, and compatible with Apple Motion as well. For any PowerMac G4 - whether for work or play - no G4 Mac Video card is faster! That said - ATI no longer has a 'low end' type card, nothing released to replace the $140 retail Radeon 9000 128MB Mac Edition. Even as a low end card, the 9000 is a Quartz Acceleration enabled card that provides a HUGE video performance boost vs. original Stock ATI Rage AGP and GeForce2MX cards as well as an ok bump vs. the GeForce4MX. Well... We've not got limited supply of brand new Radeon 9000 MacEdition 64MB AGP Video Cards. Performance is very similar to the 128MB version and now available from $119.99, they are an economical option for kicking up the video performance of most any PowerMac G4. ATI Rebate available on purchased of the Radeon 9800 Mac G5 256MB Edition. Our price is $249, after $50 Rebate available on pucrhases through 10/31/2005, the net becomes $199.00. Lastly - we have also renewed our Stock on Apple OEM ATI 9600 Pro 64MB AGP Video Cards. These cards are the lowest cost video card option we've got that meet the requirement for running Apple's Motion software as well as being supported by Quartz Extreme as well as Tiger's Core Video Acceleration technologies. These cards are available right now at $95 for PowerMac G5, $99 for G4 Mirrored-Drive-Door, and $107.99 for G4 Digital Audio. This full array of video card options and more available in our Video Cards online section. NewerTech: Rave reviews for the NewerTech miniStack FW/USB2 storage & hub solutions! MacWorld Nov-05 gave it a 4 out of 5 mice. MacAddict compared our product to competing options from LaCie and MicroNet - and awarded us 'Editor's Choice' with a 'Great 4/5' rating vs. both of the competing products only scoring '3 out of 5s'. The miniStack FireWire/USB2 storage solution with integrated FireWire and USB2 Powered Hubs is designed to match perfectly with the Mac mini, but also for any system with USB2 or FireWire. A superior design and our selection of only the best performing and most reliable hard drive mechanisms is what puts the miniStack above all others. Better yet, the pricing is even better with 0GB config now $10 less at $89.95 and 80GB to 500GB solutions up to $20 lower. OWC NEWS: The reviews are starting to come in on our Mercury Elite-AL FireWire/USB and they are glowing! Already awarded a 4.5 out of 5 in Oct/2005 Macworld, OWC Mercury Elite also now carries Mac Addict Editor's Choice award given a 4 out of 5 'Great' in their November 2005 issue. Available from $129.99 in capacities of 80GB and up to 1TB(1000GB), these units are FAST, Reliable, and quiet too. We know what's important and as such use not the cheapest drives we could get, but rather the best drives for the job. With this as our normal operating procedure, it's no wonder why our Elite drive line now and historically has always come out on top. All Elite-AL models also feature the latest Oxford FireWire chipset too. Better parts for a better solution. New OWC Mercury On-The-Go 7200RPM up to 100GB FireWire & FireWire/USB Portable Solution models now available. Already recognized with top ratings including Editor's Choice, these new 7200RPM models up to 100GB truly raise the bar for portable storage performance. The full Mercury On-The-Go line is available from 40GB to 120GB from $124.99, is bus powerable, can fit in a shirt pocket, and weighs in at under 12 ounces. High Performance, Rugged-Reliable, Pocket Sized Power. :) New lower prices on OWC SuperDrive Solutions including: External 16X DVD w/DL Mercury FireWire/USB2 Solutions now as low as $99. Internal SuperDrive for PowerMac G3/G4/G5, iMac G4, eMac G4 from $45 - 16X speed now from $57.99 Internal 8X SuperDrive w/Dual Layer for Powerbook G4 Models now from $139.99 For iMac G5, Cubes, & Mac mini too - see them all... And just in time to make those holiday DVD home video gifts. :) Of Interest and/or for Fun: Transparent Aluminum... A bit of science fiction from the movie Star Trek IV. Remembering the scene with 'Scotty' plugging away its molecular design into a Macintosh after he was told it didn't take voice commands (hmmm). Now, the Airforce is testing a transparent, aluminum based composite that is thinner than traditional bullet proof glass while being significantly stronger and more durable at the same time. Apple's got company when it comes to laptop battery problems. HP joins the Laptop Battery Recall Club with a 135,000 unit recall. Battery Biz, who makes Apple some compatible models, recently recalled about 10,000 batteries. Can't help the HP users... But for Apple Laptops, the NewerTech batteries are the best - and built right here in the USA with no corners cut. :) Intro Closing: The best of intentions neither slows the procession of time nor gets newsletters written. Maintaining about a one newsletter per month pace and still intend to bring that back to the normal 2-3 per month, just not there yet. Anyway, a lot of new stuff just in the last week and a half and no shortage in the future expected either. Music on the Mac 9/19/2005 - Deal of the Year & Real World Solutions Greetings from www.macsales.com/music Join the Podcasting Revolution! Everyone is talking about podcasting these days. This grass roots phenomenon has taken the world by storm because it enables anyone the opportunity to have their own podcast show available for subscription on the internet. I even have my own podcast show called "Rock Your Computer" that is all about creating music on your computer rig. Many people are wondering how they can get involved and what equipment they need to do so. I am excited to report that we at OWC have identified the perfect low cost, complete podcast production solution. As you all must know at this point, M-Audio is a company that makes great products at affordable prices. Their product called GrooveLab is designed for the budding composer/remixer. It also happens to be a killer way to create podcasts. It includes a USB audio interface and a headset with attached microphone. The Ableton Live Delta software that is included is a light but very capable version of Ableton Live. This recording software is easy to use and lets you record audio and use the included loops to build a music track with vocal. The included loops can be combined to create the soundtrack for your podcast and you can record your spoken content with the included mic. This is the best sub $100 podcast solution I have seen. Even if you use GarageBand as your podcast recording application, the GrooveLab interface and headset/mic is still a clever and economical solution! Get a GrooveLab and get your podcast "ON THE AIR" today! ---- studioA recording studio and Other World Computing new audio showroom by appointment - email: rogerad@macsales.com For all your audio/music needs, macsales.com/music online. Interact with Roger and other Apple Music/Audio users in our online music and audio forums. About our Music Guru: Roger Adler is a 4 time EMMY nominated composer/producer/performer. You may have heard his music in his role as Music Director for the A&E TV Series "The BEST of COMIC RELIEF" starring Robin Williams, Billy Crystal and Whoopi Goldberg. He also appeared in and played on the soundtrack for the hit movie "GROUNDHOG DAY" starring Bill Murray and Andi MacDowell. He is the Music Director for the popular TV Series "WILD CHICAGO" now in it's 15th season on WTTW in Chicago. In 2001, he traveled to Antwerp, Belgium to produce and perform in the annual meeting for Philips Electronics. He recently composed and performed two TV commercials for WRANGLER JEANS, currently airing on ESPN. Closing: My son, who is just about four months old, has brought I and my wife more joy than I could ever have imagined. It's just amazing watching him grow. Getting larger and also growing in terms of his own unique personality. New chatter and laugh noises - different cries, every day something new. He used to hate 'tummy time' (versus being on his back or held) - now he seems to enjoy it and even rolled over unaided for the first time. We've taken tons of pictures, some of which I share in these newsletters. My wife and I also video clips here and there, the first hour of which spanned about the last two months (just got the camcorder in August). The previous night had set it to import into iMovie with every intention of going to bed... instead, both of watched the video playback as it imported - couldn't pull away from it and despite it being late and us being tired, wished there had been more. The pictures are one thing, but I had no idea the power of those videos. I now understand better the extreme enthusiasm my own Dad had doing the home videos he did when I and my siblings were just kids. I'm not really one for wanting to see myself as a kid on video - but I get see there is an entirely different perspective watching how your kids grew up. I know, he's not even four months old... still, it's going to be the same fascination no matter how old he gets.
